CHPS Takes on Greenhouse Gases, Climate Change and Schools

On January 9th, 2008, CHPS called together a group of stakeholders to discuss schools and their impact on climate change, and how CHPS can address greenhouse gas emissions in its 2009 Criteria revision.

Stakeholders found that the construction of schools and transportation to and from schools are the main contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the life of a school. Measuring GHGs, as well as reducing the barriers to implementation, through federal, state, utility and CHPS incentives, as well as reducing approval barriers at the DSA level all play significant parts in the effort to reduce GHG emissions in schools.

You can read ten key findings, as well as view presentations and the stakeholders in attendance here.

Featured presentations from Climate Change and Schools Stakeholders Meeting:

Estimating the Carbon Footprint of Schools (498 KB): CHPS Executive Director Charles Eley discussed schools and their contribution to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.

Green California Schools: Grid Neutral by Design (706 KB): State Architect David Thorman, Office of Public School Construct Executive Officer Rob Cook and Roy McBrayer, Deputy to the State Architect and Program Manager, CA Green Building Initiative, presented on the state's plan to create a program for Grid Neutral schools for 2009.

ASTM/ANSI Life-Cycle Impact Assessment Standards

Stan Rhodes from Scientific Certification Systems discussed existing life-cycle greenhouse gas impact metrics options.

CHPS Solicits Comments for Update of 2006 Criteria

The CHPS Technical Committee has begun development of the 2009 Edition of the CHPS Criteria. CHPS want to hear from its users on any new optimal design strategies or technologies that CHPS should be considering, or any other comments or resources that could help implementation of a CHPS credit become more clear. Comments will be considered by the Technical Committee if submitted before February 15th COB. Click here to submit comments.

Funding Available from CHPS for High Performance Relocatables

School districts: Get a high performance relocatable for the same price as a regular relocatable!

CHPS is offering $5000 grants to relocatable manufacturers to encourage the production of high performance relocatables. School districts can be matched with these manufacturers to purchase a high performance relocatable for no additional cost. In addition, manufacturers will be able to defray some of the cost of the manufacturing premiums for producing a high performance relocatable. The goal of this program is to encourage the construction and purchasing of high performance relocatable classrooms.

With the publication of CHPS Best Practices Manual Volume VI - Relocatable Classrooms, which includes specifications for a high performance relocatable, the school construction market now has the opportunity to see high performance relocatables in action.

If you are a school district or relocatables manufacturer interested in this program, click here to learn more or contact Ariel Dekovic at ariel@chps.net or 415-957-9888.

CHPS Participates in 2008 CEFPI Conference

CHPS participated in CEFPI's 6th Annual High Performance School Symposium in Scottsdale, AZ last week. The conference was kicked off with a discussion from Edward Mazaria, a internationally-known architect in environmental design, on climate change. There were numerous workshops on how green, high performance schools were "really working" in school districts and a visit was made to Verrado High School, a green school in Buckeye, AZ. The conference ended with presentations from CHPS and LEED on their individual rating systems and new program developments. CEFPI will also be hosting national School Building Week coming up April 28-May2, 2008.

Now Available: ASHRAE & NREL's Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) have released the Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings. This resource provides a sensible approach to easily achieve advanced levels of energy savings without having to resort to detailed calculations or analysis. Included in the guide are products and technologies that can allow designers to achieve a 30% savings over ASHRAE 90.1.
