CHPS 2006 Relocatable Classrooms Volume Released
The CHPS Board of Directors approved the 2006 Edition of the CHPS Relocatable Classroom Volume VI at their December 7th meeting in Sacramento. The new volume on relocatable classrooms provides tools for manufacturers, school districts and design teams to specify, build and acquire high performance relocatable classrooms. This volume includes the latest in lighting, daylighting and HVAC system design that allow for superior energy and indoor environmental quality performance that are not found in your typical portable classrooms. Relocatable classrooms can be equivalent learning environments to high performance classrooms with careful planning and incorporation of the right features and construction techniques. Click here to download a copy of the CHPS Relocatable Classroom Volume VI. Look for CHPS’s grant program for building relocatables to the high performance specifications in March 2007.

Poway Unified Joins a Growing List of CHPS School Districts
Congratulations to Poway Unified School District for becoming a CHPS district!
In November 2006, the Board of Education at Poway Unified School District passed a CHPS district resolution committing to incorporate the CHPS Criteria into every new school project that the district undertakes. The resolution states, "The Board directs staff... to ensure that every new school, new building, and modernization project, from the beginning of the design process, incorporate CHPS criteria and best practices... and that the next round of construction projects minimally meet the CHPS qualifying criteria." CHPS extends its congratulations to the Poway Board of Education and everyone in Poway who worked to make this commitment to healthier, more environmentally-friendly schools a reality! Californians Allocate $100 Million for Green Schools

Funds distributed based on design standards; more green features mean more state money

With the passing of Proposition 1D in California, voters allocated $100 million dollars to fund the design and construction of energy efficient, healthy school facilities for the California public school system. "This vote cements California as a leader in creating the next generation of schools for its students," said Kristin Heinen, Assistant Director for the Collaborative for High Performance Schools, Inc. (CHPS), which created design standards for the awarding of the funding. “This funding is really the first of its kind in the state and secures the continued design and construction of greener, healthier schools in our state.”

CHPS Given Letter of Recommendation by CA State Officials

In a letter sent to all 1054 school district superintendents in December 2006, the California Secretary of Education, the Chair of the California Energy Commission and the State Architect, singled out CHPS as the recommended resource for schools pursuing high performance projects. The letter stated, "The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization ... can be a tremendous help to you as you assess your school facility options. CHPS provides school districts and their design teams the essential tools to build energy efficient, healthy, productive, and environmentally sustainable facilities. These tools include information, services, and incentives to assist school districts with planning and designing new facilities or modernizing existing facilities. For example, CHPS makes available, at no cost, a series of Best Practices Manuals.... When deciding upon what criteria to use for the new High Performance School Program, the SAB selected the CHPS standards due to the organization’s expertise in California school construction."
