CHPS Online Updates
CHPS Case Studies Booklet Online
CHPS has developed a book of case studies that profiles five impressive high performance projects in California. From a public junior high school in Petaluma to San Diego Unified School district's commitment to use high performance design in every new school built, school districts across the state are showing how easy and necessary it is to build the next generation of schools today. Click here to view the CHPS Design Files Booklet.

CHPS Professional Design Trainings Online
Did you miss the recent CHPS Design Trainings on designing a high performance school? Webcasts of the five three-hour seminars, as well as the presentation slides are available for viewing. The presentations cover a variety of topics from the 2006 Edition of the CHPS Best Practices Manual, including sites and water, HVAC and building envelope, lighting and daylighting and materials selection and waste management. Need Assistance with the CHPS Daylighting Credits?

Register Now for FREE Training on SPOT
April 19, 2007 - Irwindale, CA

There is still room to participate in an in-depth training on SPOT™ Version 3.1 software. The Sensor Placement + Optimization Tool assists designers in quantifying the intended electric lighting and annual daylighting characteristics of a given space. The software also calculates the required daylighting metrics for CHPS and LEED rating systems, generating a printable report, and helps establish the optimal photosensor placement and settings.

A free workshop is offered from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 19th, at Southern California Edison’s Customer Technology Application Center, in Irwindale, CA. Space is limited to 25 attendees per workshop. Please RSVP to Judie Porter at jporter@archenergy.com. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop; free software CD-ROMs and users’ manuals will be provided.  SPOT™ activities are supported by the California Energy Commission, the California Institute of Energy and the Environment, and Energy Design Resources.

New CHPS Schools and Districts Join the Growing CHPS Community

New CHPS School District: Menlo Park City School District

Menlo Park City School District recently passed a CHPS School Board resolution that all new construction will be built to CHPS Criteria. Laura Rich, a Menlo Park School Board member, said, "Through two years of Board meetings and the planning sessions, the Community made it clear to the Menlo Park School Board that environmental issues were highly important to them as we worked to grow and improve our campuses.  The CHPS resolution provides a framework that will help guide our decisions and design as we work towards building true 21st century schools."

New CHPS Designed School: Cajon Valley Middle School
New CHPS District: Cajon Valley Unified School District

CHPS congratulates Cajon Valley Middle School for becoming a CHPS Designed School and Cajon Valley Unified School District for passing a CHPS resolution! CVMS earned 29 points, surpassing the minimum of 28 points required for a CHPS high performance school. The school is especially strong in the CHPS site and water category, scoring 10 out of 14 possible points. The site is centrally located, with a small building footprint and good stormwater management practices. CHPS Board Member Bob Nicholson from the San Diego County Office of Education represented CHPS at the CHPS Recognition Ceremony in March. Click here to learn more about Cajon Valley ES.

New CHPS Designed School: Monterey Ridge Elementary School

Chip Fox, CHPS Board member from San Diego Gas and Electric, presented Monterey Ridge Elementary School with their CHPS Designed award at the recent recognition ceremony for the school. Jon Alan Baker, President of lead architectural firm, NTD Stichler, said, "We are pleased to assist the Poway Unified School District in designing schools that strive for sustainable design. Monterey Ridge Elementary School's design includes long-range strategies that align with the District's goals for environmentally responsive design. This represents an important social responsibility that reinforces their overall core value of serving the needs of children."

Has your school district signed a CHPS resolution? Let us know about it! We want to recognize you in the CHPS e-bulletin and on the CHPS website.

Call for Entries: Lifecycle Building Challenge

The Lifecycle Building Challenge http://www.lifecyclebuilding.org supports the development of new thinking on green building and reuse.

They are looking for your innovative ideas, policies, tools and designs on conserving resources and reducing construction and demolition debris. The guiding principles of the foundation are based on Design for Deconstruction work done at Chartwell School (a CHPS School). Lifecycle building is the design of building materials, components, information systems, and management practices to create buildings that facilitate and anticipate future changes to and eventual adaptation or dismantling for recovery of all systems, components, and materials. Some ideas that promote lifecycle building include nail-free paneling and moveable walls.

This free competition is open to students and professionals and registration ends April 15, 2007. Winners will receive free conference registration to West Coast Green and recognition at the conference. The three student winners will each receive $2,500 cash awards from the LBC sponsor, GreenBuildingBlocks.com. The Challenge partners are the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, American Institute of Architects, Building Materials Reuse Association, and West Coast Green.
