Chartwell School
CHPS Completed School Project

We feel fortunate to have worked with CHPS and to be part of new thinking about what a school should be. We have adopted practices that follow these standards for high performance schools and intelligent energy and environmental design. Using life cycle cost analysis, the high performance, green features of our new campus will more than pay for themselves. They will also enhance learning outcomes for students, today and for many years to come.” Douglas Atkins, Chartwell Executive Director

"A strong focus of the design is on high performance, healthy classrooms. Natural ventilation, radiant heating, and a well-insulated envelope will ensure thermal comfort, and contribute to high quality classroom acoustics by eliminating the noise generated by more traditional HVAC systems. Well-day-lit classrooms have been shown to significantly improve learning rates, reduce absenteeism, and improve alertness. The day-lighting strategies at Chartwell include careful orientation and shading of windows to control glare yet admit ample natural light. In addition, the Chartwell School is a strong leader in their community and intends to be a model for development in the region by demonstrating and disseminating sustainable building practices that create exceptionally healthy and comfortable learning environments while dramatically reducing environmental impacts. Participating in the CHPS program fits well with Chartwell's objectives and with EHDD's design philosophy. The Chartwell campus will provide a high performance educational environment for the students, showcasing design principles that support and enhance learning." Michelle Hill, EHDD Architecture

“Because not all great minds think alike, Chartwell educates students with a wide range of visual and auditory language-based learning challenges in a way that provides the learning skills, confidence, and creativity to return successfully to mainstream education and to learn throughout life. Though Chartwell was established in 1983, we had always operated in older, rented facilities. When it was time to design Chartwell's first permanent home, our highest priorities were student learning and health.” Douglas Atkins, Chartwell Executive Director
