CHPS Update: 2009 Edition Criteria Changes Review, Development of the CHPS Criteria for Existing School Performance and Operations, and New Criteria for Relocatables.
The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) has provided schools and design teams with tools for building a new generation of high performance schools since 2000. Learn about the newest developments in the CHPS program, including the development of a CHPS Criteria for existing schools performance and operations, CHPS newest state programs in Texas and Colorado, and the 2009 Edition of the California Criteria.
Speakers: Jim Ogden, WCS/Ca and CHPS Technical Committee Chair; Kristin Heinen, CHPS Assistant Director; Nick Semon, CHPS Technical Programs Coordinator

Morning Workshop Series: 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Carbon Footprints and Schools:  First You Measure, Then You Reduce

Understand your school's greenhouse gas emissions--from how to measure the largest contributors, to how to set, and meet, goals for reduction. The presentation will include CA AB32 reduction targets for schools, grid neutrality, and how to calculate and register emissions.

Speakers: Roy McBrayer, Deputy State Architect, CA Department of General Services; Mike Cannon, Natomas Unified School District. Moderator: Dana Papke, CA Air Resources Board

Giving the Nod to Major Mods

There are an estimated 125,000 existing schools in the U.S., which present a vast opportunity to reduce schools' impact on the environment and improve student health on a large scale. However, high performance modernizations have their own unique challenges.  Experienced school district officials and design and construction professionals will share their insights on how to implement a successful, headache-free school modernization project.  The workshop will include the best low-cost, high-benefit strategies for high performance major mods; strategies for leveraging multiple modernization projects at the district level; and essential communication techniques for designers and contractors to lead the way to upgrading an existing school into a high performance school.

Speakers: Lisa Gelfand, Gelfand Partners Architects; Gary Luepke, Trane; Bill Savidge, West Contra Costa Unified School District; and Doug Williams, Blach Construction. Moderator: Rob Samish, Lionakis and CHPS Board member

High Performance School Policy, Reporting and Local Bond Bills:  Stronger Together
Is your school or district ready to commit to high performance schools? School boards and community members can be excellent agents for high performance action in a school district. This workshop will cover smart ways to formalize and implement district policies for high performance schools, and how to report and track their progress. It will also cover how to fund those commitments and build community support through local bond bills that invest taxpayers' money responsibly in efficient, green, healthy schools.
Speakers: Virginia Hyatt, Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District; Jim Watts, San Diego City Schools. Moderator: Kristin Heinen, CHPS Assistant Director

Afternoon Workshop Series: 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM

The Carbon Emissions Menu: Eating your Energy Efficiency Vegetables and Getting Your Renewable Cake, Too!
Now that you have learned how to measure and report your project's emissions (Morning Climate Workshop), learn how to implement the most effective carbon footprint reduction strategies. Topics will include energy-efficient lighting systems, effective use of energy management systems, innovative financing solutions, selection and installation for on-site power generation, and strategies for effective water use and conservation.
Speakers: Mark Fisher, Integrated Design Associates; Charles Shinneman, Capital Engineering and Stu Reeve, Energy Manager for Poudre School District in Colorado. Moderator: Elizabeth Shirakh, CA Energy Commission and CHPS Board member.

Operating Your Way to a HEALTHY, High Performance School
What are the best strategies for creating healthy school environments for children? This workshop will examine the steps that existing schools can take to operate their way to a healthy high performance indoor environment.  Speakers will discuss the national perspective, including federal standards for the operations of schools; green cleaning strategies and effective policies; and how to test indoor air quality.
Speakers: Claire Barnett, Healthy Schools Network; Deborah Moore, Green Schools Initiative; and Simon Turner, Healthy Buildings International, Inc. Moderator: Toni Stein, State of CA Department of General Services Procurement Division, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Program and CHPS Technical Committee member.

Designer's Corner: Understanding the Impact of Your Design Decisions

Many features of high performance schools are not difficult to accomplish; however, the analysis and simulations needed to assess the performance benefits of integrating these strategies can be complicated. This workshop will explain the differences between building information modeling (BIM) and the standard independent modeling approach. Two examples of BIM software will be explored to show the benefits of integrated design modeling, and how it can aid in assessing the impacts of specific design decisions on building performance (i.e. HVAC selection), and what the impact of that decision is in relation to others (i.e. daylighting). Speakers will also cover the design and analysis time, and software costs. The first example will showcase use of Green Building Studio, IES VE and ECOTECT, utilizing Revit Architecture. The second example will cover Graphisoft's ArchiCAD and ECOTECT tool used on the first CHPS Verified project, American Canyon High School. The workshop will also include Savings by Design incentives associated with the use of the BIM software.
Speakers: Scott D. Davis, Autodesk; Buddy Gessel, NTD Architecture; Aaron Jobson, Quattrocchi Kwok Architects; Alex Podesta, NTD Architecture. Moderator: Bruce Thomas, NTD Architecture.
