The New York State Education Department (NYSED) published the New York High Performance Schools Guidelines (NY-CHPS 1.1) in 2007 as a voluntary Appendix to the NYSED Manual of Planning Standards. NY-CHPS adopts core CHPS Criteria and adds: Operations and Maintenance requirements and options, expanded Indoor Environmental Quality requirements and options, and Materials durability requirements based on life-cycle costs. NY-CHPS 1.2 (2009) references a more stringent NY Energy Conservation Construction Code and applicability to existing buildings.

The New York Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) provides the NY-CHPS Verification Program offering no-cost, third-party verification of compliance with NY-CHPS as well as support and training programs for districts, professional design teams, and contractors.

The New York City Green Schools Guide and Rating System was developed by the School Construction Authority to be used to guide the sustainable design, construction, and operation of new schools, modernization projects, and school renovations. In 2007, the Green Schools Guide was approved to achieve compliance with Local Law 86 of 2005 (New York City’s Green Building Law). The Green Schools Guide utilizes standards best suited to school buildings in New York City and incorporates a number of NY-CHPS criteria.
