Washington State's Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) was one of the first adopters of the CHPS framework for sustainable schools. The Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP) is the state’s benchmark for design and construction of high performance schools. The Protocol is based on the CHPS Criteria and maintained by OSPI.

All major facility projects of public school districts receiving any funding in a state capital budget must be designed and constructed to the Washington Sustainable School Design Protocol or a LEED Silver Standard. The WSSP is a self-certification program.
