With the 2022 Symposium on Safe and Secure Schools just weeks away, CHPS is highlighting select speakers who will be sharing their expertise and perspectives that advance the dialogue on ways school design impacts student safety, security, health, and wellness. Second in our series, we’re introducing you to Ian Powell, AIA, LEED AP, Managing Partner of PBK who will moderate a session on aligning operations and facility design around school safety and security goals.
Ian Powell has spent his entire professional career, spanning 42 years, in the field of educational architecture.
He has been involved in the master planning, facility condition assessment, programming, design and administration of a large number of schools. Individual projects have spanned a diverse array of building types including all configurations of primary and secondary educational facilities, higher education buildings and campuses, ancillary and support facilities (administrative facilities, professional development/conference centers, technology centers, distance learning facilities), career and technical education and vocational curriculum centers, athletic and recreational facilities, and more.
Thanks to his robust background, Ian has an intimate knowledge of the powerful interconnection between school design and safety. In fact, in 2018 PBK created a coalition of the best school security experts including dozens of school district police chiefs and law enforcement leaders from across the state of Texas who created best practices when it comes to safe school design.
After the devastating Uvalde school shooting, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District reached out to PBK to explore how the district’s campuses could supplement their safety and security, as covered in an article by Rose-Ann Aragon for Click2Houston.com. PBK provided analysis on building safety at no cost, and, according to Powell, PBK strives to do everything it can to help Uvalde CISD and ultimately hopes to help schools achieve something very important: a safe and welcoming school district and facilities in the future by increasing the toolbox of solutions they can put in place.
Today, Ian proposes that vigorous advocacy for Safety and Security in Education be equally a personal mission as well as a professional obligation for design professionals. In addition to serving as Managing Partner for PBK’s Houston office, Ian leads PBK’s firm wide effort to advocate for Safety & Security Best Practices in all Educational Environments.
