Ocean View Elementary earns CHPS Verified status
Congratulations to Ocean View Elementary School in Albany, CA for completing the review process in July and earning CHPS Verified status as a high performance school. Ocean View is the third school in Albany Unified School District to earn this distinction, following the Albany Middle School Annex and Albany High School addition.
The 60,000-square-foot facility held its grand opening ceremony and welcomed its first students in Aug. 2021. Designed by architects Gould&Evans (now Multistudio) and Derivi Castellanos Architects, and built by OverAA construction, the net zero ready campus is stocked with features that promote healthy learning, wellbeing, and sustainability.
Each pair of spacious classrooms connects through a shared meeting room to provide flexible breakout space for small group learning, class collaboration, and sharing of educational resources. Furniture is equipped for mobility and flexibility; natural and classroom light is balanced; and outside noise is minimized through noise-reduction technologies incorporated in ceilings and walls. All classrooms feature ample daylighting and operable windows that provide natural ventilation.
The design was guided by the goal of providing a strong sense of belonging for Ocean View students and their families, many of whom hail from international backgrounds.
Said long-time Principal Terryl Georgeson, “Students were at the center of every design decision.”
And the students, of course, are what this process is all about. So whether they’re just starting construction or receiving that letter of congratulations, these great school projects are all success stories worth celebrating.
