MINOR RENOVATIONS program
CHPS has launched a Minor Renovations Program with the backing of government partner Sourcewell to provide the timely support millions of school districts need to improve the performance of their existing facilities and systems and is actively seeking partners and sponsors join us.
the GAP
There is no industry-aligned set of best practices for school building renovation and modernization projects, despite being the majority of districts’ facility expenditures. Existing certification programs — which are focused primarily on major renovations or new construction — don’t help school districts with smaller modernization projects. The result: many smaller renovation projects fall through the cracks due to a lack of staff, funding, and best practices needed to execute projects successfully — creating and deepening a significant equity gap.
the FACTS
School facilities received a D+ on the Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, and it’s estimated that 53% of public schools need to invest in repairs, renovations, and modernizations now to put buildings in good overall condition. This will require a total investment of approximately $197B, adding on to the existing $85M/year funding gap for school facilities.
Performance improvements offer hope. Schools currently spend more than $12.5B/year on energy. Buildings that operate more efficiently can help to close the funding gap while also creating vastly better learning environments.
the SOLUTION
For 20 years, CHPS has developed and maintained the nation’s only third-party building standard explicitly designed and exclusively for K-12 schools grounded in student performance. Now, we are evolving to meet the growing needs of our students and their schools — and this program is an important pillar of our new vision to make better school design the rule, not the exception.
The program will cover all aspects of school buildings that affect student performance, including air quality, thermal comfort, lighting, and acoustics and noise. Standards are built upon a foundation of improved energy efficiency, and will target dated or under-performing systems including HVAC, lighting, windows, and building envelope and insulation.
A successful solution requires the diverse perspectives and expertise of those that know the importance of school renovations and improvements. CHPS will rely upon industry experts and founding members, including building scientists, health and safety representatives, leading manufacturers, consultants, service providers, architects, engineers, educators, utilities, and school districts personnel. Together, the experts will define the criteria and launch our pilot program.
