CHPS DESIGNED™ schools

CHPS Designed™ is a voluntary, self-certification system that helps school districts and design teams accomplish high-performance schools built according to CHPS criteria.

HOW it works

CHPS Designed schools is one of CHPS recognition programs best suited for school districts and design teams familiar with high performance projects, as it is largely self-governed and self-certified.

When pursuing a CHPS Designed school, project teams utilize CHPS Criteria — which has been developed based on decades of research and on-the-ground implementation — to guide their high-performance school planning, design, execution, and operations strategies, tactics, and products. Like other building certification programs, these criteria underpin a points system.

Project scorecards are available to help design teams manage the points they are claiming. This is a useful tool for school districts and CHPS project managers to monitor compliance with the CHPS credits and prerequisites. It offers a checklist for points earned, and can be used to designate responsible team members and track compliance with credits.

Process

CHPS Designed does not include a third-party review. Accountability for compliance with CHPS Criteria rests on the school district and design team, and CHPS provides a narrative review for credibility and recognition. The CHPS Designed program involves submission of a scorecard tallying prerequisites and credits with short, written explanations of how the project complies with the criteria.

CHPS Designed submissions are completed at two phases: at the end of design documents (Design Review) and when the building is substantially complete or permitted for occupancy (Construction Review).
